Diagenetic Processes in Aquaculture Ponds Showing Metal Accumulation on Shrimp Gills ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Royer, Florence; Caradec, Florian; Lopez, Etienne; Hubert, Clarisse; Rabiller, Emilie; Desclaux, Terence; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Andrieux-loyer, Francoise.
The gill is the organ by which many toxic metals are taken up by crustaceans. Iron is known to precipitate at its surface, a phenomenon recently observed in some tropical aquaculture ponds. The present study uses a field approach to understand better the environmental conditions and ecological processes involved in this deposit. Because shrimp are exposed to reduced products originating from organic waste accumulated in the sediment, spatial variation in pH, redox potential and concentrations of dissolved metals in pore water were investigated in these ponds. Total organic carbon, acid volatile sulfide and pyrite were also analyzed in the solid phase. Fe2+ in pore waters showed high spatial variability between ponds and within the same pond with...

Guide pour le suivi de la qualité du milieu marin en Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Beliaeff, Benoit; Bouvet, Guenole; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Laugier, Thierry; David, Carine.
This guide is intended to facilitate the implementation of specifications for marine environmental monitoring in New Caledonia. It is intended for public or private environmental actors. He provides a set of information on marine monitoring: summary of environmental regulations and the practical implications, definitions of terms, proposed general approach for the establishment of a monitoring, sampling strategy elements, method to develop reference frames, recommendations for the management and exploitation of data collected. The guide also provides lists of suggested environmental parameters to monitor for different pressures and general state of the environment, as well as, a set of methodology sheets for parameters and (when available) the reference...

Phytoplankton dynamics in the southern New Caledonian lagoon during a southeast trade winds event ArchiMer
Neveux, Jacques; Lefebvre, Jean-pierre; Le Gendre, Romain; Dupouy, Cecile; Gallois, Francis; Courties, Claude; Gerard, Philippe; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Ouillon, Sylvain.
During the Echolag cruise (13 February-8 March 2007), the effect of 16-30 knot trade winds on abundance, community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton was investigated in the southern part of the New Caledonian coral reefs and surrounding oceanic waters. In this area, the coral reefs form two horn-like structures (hereinafter referred to as 'horn reefs'), oriented south-east, and separated by a relatively deep valley. Three repeated samplings at one week intervals of a 32 station array showed that trade winds induce surface water cooling and significant enrichment of mid- and bottom waters above the reef shelf. This enrichment appeared as the result of a general rise of the oceanic thermocline and nitracline due to the combination of trade winds and...
